“You go first.”
“No, you first.”
When Maddox snuck in through her window, this is the last thing she expected to be doing. She was hoping for soft touching and kissing. Instead, he brought a Ouija board on a dark and stormy night.
“Fine,” he said, “I’ll go first.” They put their hands on the wand. Just their fingertips, careful not to apply any pressure. “Dear Spirits, or whatever, are you there?”
A crash of thunder followed a flash of lightning in the distance. They listened to the pitter patter of rain hitting the roof, leaves rattling in the wind. Then, finally, the wand slid over to ‘yes’.
“Oh my God! Did you do that!?” Yolanda wouldn’t have said she was superstitious before tonight but she also said she wouldn’t let Maddox Teller sneak into her room on a school night.
“It wasn’t me!” said Maddox with a cheeky little grin and a shrug.
“Maddox, I swear to the holy Jesus, you better be lying!”
He ignored her and addressed the board again, “Hey Spirits, what’s my future wife’s name?”
This time the wand flew across the board. First to the ‘Y’, then ‘O’, ‘L’, ‘A’, ‘N’, ‘D’, ‘A’.
Yolanda gasped and turned her wide eyes to Maddox.
He grinned at her. “That’s what I thought.”
